In 2018 two churches Gidlow and Whitley Methodist Churches, which were less than one mile apart, merged to be known as Spencer Road Methodist Church. Both had for a long time served their respective communities and today together serve both areas. Spencer Road Church offers a traditional form of worship although modern worship songs as well as hymns are sung.

The church seats approximately 180 people. There are two halls as well as a classroom and a choir vestry. In addition there are the stewards (also used as the circuit office) and ministers vestries. There is a coffee morning each week and recently we are starting to have social events. We are a friendly church and everyone is made welcome.

The church is very much used as a community building. A Pre School Play group meets on 5 days a week, we have a mother and toddler group meeting 3 times a week, we also accommodate the Wigan Photographic Society, the Willpower Theatre Group for both children and teenagers.

The main hall is frequently used for birthday parties.
