Crooke

Crooke Methodist Church occupies a prominent position in the charming village of Crooke, situated
just two and a half miles from the centre of Wigan. For more than 150 years the church has brought
many generations of people to faith and witness, and it remains today an integral and important
feature in the life of the local community.

Crooke has a membership of about 30, with an average weekly attendance at the Sunday service of
about 15. Worship is of the traditional style, mostly led by visiting local preachers, with an appointed
minister officiating approximately once a month at a service which will normally include Holy
Communion. To emphasise and reinforce our Methodist connections , there are joint services held
on the first Sunday of each month joining up with our friends from The Vale and Shevington
Methodist churches, alternating at each of the three churches. Crooke is a friendly church where
everyone is assured of a warm welcome. It is also a place where members and visitors alike can find
the peace and tranquillity to reflect, meditate and pray and have a closer walk with God.

Crooke church itself offers a comfortable seating capacity for between 60 – 70 people. At the rear of
the premises is a spacious church hall, which is available for hire and is ideally suited for retreats,
group meetings, social gatherings, parties and the like. Crooke has no wish to exclude itself from the
‘real’ world outside, and the church maintains good relations and links with the adjacent private
village nursery and the Village Residents’ Association, which also seeks to serve the interests of the
village as a whole.

Among the regular activities currently taking place in the church are a weekly dancing evening and a
Mindful Events meeting. A more recent innovation has been a Coffee and Conversation morning
each Wednesday at 10am open to anyone to attend for light refreshments and a chat. Jumble sales,
coffee mornings, summer and winter fayres invariably attract scores of people from near and far
onto the premises, and these, together with other fund raising events have brought many benefits
to the church and to the charities it supports, not only in terms of finance, but also from the
interaction between those who have faith, those who do not and those who may be looking to find
one.

Although small in number, Crooke church is blessed with hard working, dedicated members who
freely give of their time, energies and talents in expressing their faith. It is our continuing hope and
prayer that an atmosphere and environment will be created at Crooke which will appeal to and
attract others to share and experience for themselves.
